»The Big Bs« - Janoska Ensemble
Up until the time of Johannes Brahms, improvisation – that is, performing something without preparation, off the cuff – was still an indisputable trademark of the great masters. Today, this discipline has almost been forgotten, because while »free music-making« used to be a skill that every outstanding musician mastered, today the demand for precision in everyday concert life – and possibly also a lack of courage to play without sheet music – is displacing this ability.

Disturbing the Peace as a Principle - Moop Mama
The brass band Moop Mama, founded in 2009, became known mainly through unannounced guerrilla concerts in public spaces, where rapper Keno Langbein likes to use a megaphone. The band calls its style "Urban Brass", and its claim is definitely political: Moop Mama is concerned with the reconquest of public space, but also, for example, with protesting against the destruction of nature and inadequate policies against global warming. Moop Mama's performances in serious halls are also spontaneous, as the formation's Konzerthaus debut at the end of 2019 brilliantly demonstrated.

Collective Diversity - Snarky Puppy
Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to »take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.«
