Dramatic Beethoven

The performances of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, which the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Singakademie traditionally present at the turn of the year, will be conducted for the first time by Omer Meir Wellber. The appearance of the music director of the Vienna Volksoper, who after only a short tenure will soon leave his place of work for Hamburg to succeed Kent Nagano at the State Opera there, probably promises a dramatic interpretation, and the top-class soloists are also mostly familiar from the opera stage: Norwegian soprano Mari Eriksmoen is best known to local audiences for celebrated performances in Mozart and Strauss roles at the Theater an der Wien. Canadian mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta, who also works as an actress, was »Young Singer of the Year« at the 2018 International Opera Awards. Her versatile compatriot Michael Schade, since he emerged as a leading Mozart tenor in the 1990s, needs no introduction to anyone anyway, while bass Franz-Josef Selig has emerged in particular as a Wagner interpreter. In addition, on this eve of New Year's Eve, there will be the Austrian premiere of a monodrama by the Israeli composer Ella Milch-Sheriff with the actor Eli Danker, known from film and television.
