Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

West-Eastern Divan

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra was founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim, Edward Said and Bernd Kauffmann and is committed to peaceful solutions to the Middle East conflict. The orchestra takes its name from the »West-Eastern Divan«, a collection of poems for which Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was inspired by the Persian poet Hafis and his »Dīwān«. The orchestra is made up of equal numbers of Israeli and Arab musicians and defies fierce political divisions in the Middle East and around the world. The latest offshoot of the project is the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble, founded by Michael Barenboim - gifted violinist and son of Daniel Barenboim. He brings the artistry of the large orchestra to an intimate chamber music format: the program includes chamber music gems by Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Pierre Boulez, and the premiere of a string octet by French composer Benjamin Attahir.
