Strong effects
Igor Stravinsky hesitated to compose his Violin Concerto »because I am not a violinist myself, and feared that my little knowledge of the instrument would not be sufficient to solve the many problems that arise in the course of working on a larger work specifically for violin«. Perhaps that is why it stands out among the genre. He was not guided by classical models; his piece should »reek of violin«. It is exuberant in effects, almost sarcastic. The German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann has already made a recording in which he brings the ambiguity, the wit and the cheekiness of Stravinsky's Violin Concerto to the ear. At the Vienna Konzerthaus, he performs the work under the baton of Thomas Guggeis with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which also includes Mendelssohn Bartholdy's romantic »Scottish« on the program, before kammerfunk provides the musical finale to the concert in the Grand Foyer.
