From Iceland to Russia
The Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg undertakes an exciting musical journey under the direction of Gustavo Gimeno. First stop: Romania. During his studies in Bucharest, György Ligeti traveled the country to record folk songs. The intensive occupation led to the composition of the »Concert românesc« in 1951. In April, there will be a rare opportunity to experience the four-movement orchestral work of our honorary member live. Second stop: Iceland. Composer and conductor Daníel Bjarnason is a true jack-of-all-trades. His oeuvre includes chamber and orchestral music, solo concertos, choral works, and film music, and he is no stranger to excursions into popular and electronic music. In 2019, he wrote his Percussion Concerto for Martin Grubinger, who is now performing the work for the first time at the Vienna Konzerthaus. Third and thus final stop: Russia. The journey ends with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's famous symphonic suite »Scheherazade«, which wraps the fairy tales from »The Thousand and One Nights« in dazzling tonal colors.
