Superlative musical art
It is truly a unique musical monument: Johann Sebastian Bach's »St. Matthew Passion«. It is not merely a musical depiction of the Passion of Jesus Christ. It shows man in all his vulnerability, its message is immediately moving. And Friedrich Nietzsche even said that anyone who had completely forgotten Christianity would really hear it like a gospel in Bach's St. Matthew Passion. After the death of the Thomaskantor, the »St. Matthew Passion« was temporarily forgotten, but since its rediscovery by the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1829, it has been »the« monumental choral work par excellence. 90 years later, on April 12, 1919, the work was performed for the first time by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Singakademie at the Vienna Konzerthaus. And its 95th performance will once again feature the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Singakademie alongside a select group of soloists. Matthew Halls, the chief conductor of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, will be on the podium.
