Resurrection

Just in time for Easter Monday, a resurrection story is on the program. Heinrich Schütz presented the first printing of his »Historia der fröhlichen und siegreichen Auferstehung unsers einigen Erlösers und Seligmachers Jesu Christi,« which has only been heard once before at the Wiener Konzerthaus, in 1623. At that time, the Thirty Years' War was raging, so that, according to Schütz's words, »the praiseworthy music had not only fallen into great decline due to the continuing dangerous wars, but had also been completely laid low in many places.« Even at the most powerful Protestant court in Germany, Dresden, where he was Kapellmeister, these turmoils did not pass without a trace. At the end of his »Historia,« which is as simple as it is moving, however, the evangelist's cries of »Victoria,« which rise above the two choruses, give way to Easter rejoicing.
