»The man at the piano«

In fact, at first it was only men who took part in the first »Schubertiades«. These were not always purely musical private events, but rather meetings of critical minds disguised from the censors as harmless banquets, which were equally concerned with literature and philosophy. While Schubert's lieder on the previous evening emphasized the sociable aspect of these typically Biedermeier gatherings, in their second »Schubertiade« Messrs. Höbarth, Coin and Schiff slip into the roles of Ignaz Schuppanzigh (1766-1830), Joseph Lincke (1783-1837) and Carl Maria Bocklet (1801-1881), who premiered Schubert's B-flat major trio on January 28, 1828, in the Viennese apartment of Josef von Spaun. Sir András Schiff then retreats on the historic Stein grand piano into Franz Schubert's piano cosmos, where the latter still wanders as a lonely sun in the most convivial musical moments such as his enchantingly beautiful dances.
