»Play & Conduct«

For its Konzerthaus debut, the Basel Baroque Orchestra La Cetra has secured the services of its compatriot Maurice Steger. The Swiss recorder virtuoso and conductor is today one of the most sought-after soloists in his field and, as a baroque specialist, is regularly on the podium of the hr-Sinfonieorchester, the Orchestra della Svizzeria Italiana and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, among others. The program of his concert with La Cetra (»Die Lyra«) includes works by the friendly German baroque masters Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann. The latter is represented with a virtuoso double concerto and excerpts from the so-called "Ringing Geography," which musicologist Adolf Hoffmann compiled in 1958 from character-corresponding instrumental movements by Telemann to form his "Singing Geography." Bach is present, among other things, with the worldly "Ricercar" from his "Musical Sacrifice", while the F major Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1057 - an arrangement of the 4th Brandenburg Concerto - gives Maurice Steger, as the ensemble's musician-leader, yet another opportunity to shine.
