Where Am I Going?

The Musicbanda Franui and the Bavarian Radio Choir meet for the first time. What unites them? The music of Gustav Mahler. While Franui uncovers Mahler's folk music sources of inspiration and breaks down large-scale orchestral songs to a pocket version, the Bavarian Radio Choir is particularly at home in his large-scale symphonic music.

Together, the two ensembles shed new light on Gustav Mahler's music in arrangements or »recompositions« of it – its before and after life included. Beginning with the influences that shaped the young Mahler, the evening leads through Mahler's »Wunderhorn songs« and his masterpiece »Das Lied von der Erde« (»The Song of the Earth«), composed in Toblach, to Viennese songs of the 20th century and the Hollywood film sound influenced by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Here as well as there – over and over again – Mahlerian tones flash up ...

The path of Gustav Mahler's life suddenly reaches into our own day: »Where am I going?«, it says at the end of the »Song of the Earth«, »I am going, I am wandering into the mountains. I seek rest for my lonely heart.«
