Festival Wien Modern 36

Presented by Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft

Peter Jakober: String Room II

Due to the great success of 2022, Peter Jakober has been commissioned by Wien Modern to completely rewrite his work Seitenraum for 18 string players in three connected rooms - this time as a veritable Saitenraum II for 26 violins, 10 violas, 14 cellos and 10 double basses. The 45-minute premiere opens the 36th festival edition of Wien Modern - and this time the word opening is taken literally: The Vienna Symphony Orchestra is spread throughout the three historic halls of the Wiener Konzerthaus, and the audience is allowed to move through the sound with the doors wide open. The precisely coordinated spatial mesh of microtonal movements in accelerations and decelerations of varying speed is controlled by 60 individual click tracks that run exactly synchronously thanks to hardware and software specially developed by Winfried Ritsch. The result is a simply delightful sound-space experience.
