In memoriam Kaija Saariaho
When the Belgian chamber music ensemble Het Collectief was invited by the Wiener Konzerthaus to perform a portrait concert dedicated to the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, nobody could have guessed that it would become a memorial concert: Saariaho, who was showered with honors after a difficult start to her career and was even voted the »greatest« of all living composers in a survey conducted by BBC Music Magazine in 2019, died - surprisingly for the public - in June last year at the age of 70. Together with soprano Liesbeth Devos, Het Collectief now portrays Saariaho in somnambulistic solo, chamber music and vocal compositions that show the creator of glittering, grand soundscapes from her intimate side.
