»Neptune«

Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729), Kapellmeister at the Dresden court from 1716 until his death, belonged to the musical avant-garde. His compositions are often characterized by bold extravagance in terms of composition and instrumentation. But he was also able to do things differently. Heinichen sometimes resorted to the full extent of showy representational art for specific occasions. The serenata »Le nozze di Nettuno e di Teti«, which was performed for the first time since its premiere on Augustus the Strong's name day in 1726, occupies a middle position here. It combines a loose mythological plot with a fair amount of praise for the ruler and creative esprit with princely entertainment at the highest vocal level.
