Te Deum

Antonín Dvořák composed his »Te Deum« in New York in 1892 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s discovery of America. That it is conceived more as a concert piece than a liturgical work can be seen in the unusual treatment of the text, as well as the large-scale construction and the quasi-symphonic proportions of its four movements. The drama of the work is reminiscent of Giuseppe Verdi and the honour of conducting the first-ever performance of this monumental cantata in the Wiener Konzerthaus has fallen to Dvorak’s compatriot, Czech maestro Tomáš Netopil, who is making his debut here.
